Writer, Editor-in-Chief & Founder of On Canada Project Media
Samanta Krishnapillai is an award-winning Tamil-Canadian writer, political commentator and cultural strategist, and the founder and editor-in-chief of On Canada Project.
Samanta holds a Bachelor of Health Sciences and a Master of Health Information Science from Western University. Her training focused on health equity, the social determinants of health, and how information moves (and fails to move) through institutions and communities. She brings that evidence-informed lens, knowledge translation, and a healthy intolerance for nonsense to Canadian politics, public health, culture, and human rights. Her writing connects headlines to history and power, names the systems behind the harm, and gives readers somewhere to go next, because changing the world is a group project. Her work has been recognized by ELLE Canada, Best Health, Future of Good and Egale.
Samanta is the first in her family to be born in Canada, in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal), on the traditional lands of the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. Her parents are Tamil refugees who survived Black July, the 1983 anti-Tamil pogrom, and were forced from their ancestral homeland amid state-sanctioned persecution and genocidal violence against Tamil people, rooted in a history shaped by centuries of European colonialism.
She holds both truths at once: belonging to a family displaced by colonial violence, and benefiting from ongoing settler colonialism in Canada. That tension shapes how she writes about justice, solidarity, and who we owe what to. It’s also why she identifies as a collectivist and sees her role in the world as a future ancestor: honouring those who came before her by fighting for a future worthy of those who come after.
Writing & Editorial Work
On Canada Project's early years were powered by an extraordinary collective effort, bringing together hundreds of volunteers between the ages of 18-34 across Canada who contributed their time, knowledge, creativity and perspectives to building something genuinely different.
As founder and editor-in-chief, Samanta developed the editorial philosophy, voice and standards that shaped this collective work. From its unapologetic commitment to human rights and evidence-informed analysis to its warmth, wit and refusal to confuse neutrality with objectivity, she established the approach that made OCP recognizable.
Throughout those early years, Samanta personally wrote or substantially edited the content published across OCP's website and social media, collaborating closely with volunteer contributors while maintaining editorial oversight and direction.
Much of that work was published under the collective On Canada Project byline, reflecting the collaborative identity of the platform rather than necessarily identifying its individual authors.
In more recent years, specifically since October 2023, Samanta has been independently running OCP's editorial operations, researching, writing, editing and publishing the content herself.

Selected Writing
A selection of Samanta's published writing, analysis and editorial reflections:

I’m angry at the politicians who are currently in office across our country that still (to varying degrees) deny our climate emergency.
These are politicians that - at best are detached from reality and, at worst, are actively colluding and benefiting from the destruction of our planet, and either way – are failing at representing public interests while still being paid a salary from taxpayer dollars.
