YHIHS: Nov 7

You heard it here second
(
about the week of Nov 7)

In Ontario, CUPE education workers vote to strike again, because, surprise surprise, Ford and Lecce continue to offer the least and expect the most from these essential education workers.

GenZ and Black voters stopped the 'red wave' in the US midterm elections and overwhelmingly voted Democrat

This is historic; midterms usually favour the party that isn't president, so the fact that Dems are holding on is fantastic!

Canada has had low turn out in recent elections, what can be done here to mirror this energy?

Iran handing out death sentences to anti-government protesters, parliament issues a letter in favour of "severe punishment" for detained protesters

A reminder that two things can be true:

  • Coverage of what's happening in Iran is falling prey to atrocity propaganda and misinformation

  • We can never 'wait' for informed, evidenced, legacy media information in the face of human rights violations

Donald Trump (who continues to undermine American democracy by claiming widespread fraud resulted in Biden's win) is running for re-election

Barbados calls out the hypocrisy of rich Western nations at COP27

Prime Minister Mia Mottley accused industrialized nations (Canada included) of creating high carbon emissions and forcing poor countries to pay the price.

Alex Jones ordered to pay another $473 million to Sandy Hooks families (the total is now $1.44 billion btw)

Jones deserves all this and more. The violence and harm he has caused for his intentional misinformation (disinformation) and hate he has spewed while making bank is disgusting. No caps on punitive damages means the final total could (hypothetically) be $2.70 trillion paid to families of victims of the mass shooting he claimed was fake.

Poilievre, who has skipped all media ops since becoming party leader, finally spoke to the media - to shit on Justin Trudeau.

Pierre, who was a Minister for Harper - wants us to be angry and divided because he thrives on that shit. And look, don't get us wrong, there is plenty of stuff to hold Trudeau accountable for but Pierre isn't our answer.

REAL TALK: Conservatives, talk big game about being for the people while continuously doing the opposite. Most of these fuckers still thing being gay is a choice and that climate change isn't real. The fact that you can be this confused about common sense shit and run for government is fucking ridiculous. Do we think Trudeau is doing enough for 2SLGBTQ community and for the Climate Emergency - no - but Pierre would do even less.

Nikita Dragun, a woman, was sent to a mens prison in Florida which is unacceptable.

Not only is this transphobic and a violation of her human rights but it's incredibly unsafe. Transgender inmates are 13x more likely to experience violence when imprisoned and this number increases if we specifically look at how trans women are treated in men's jails.

Qatar is hosting the FIFA World Cup and #BoycottQatar2022 is trending in protest

The 2022 World Cup begins at the end of the month, and host country Qatar is coming under fire for its harmful policies regarding women, migrants and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. The country's World Cup ambassador recently described homosexuality as a "damage in the mind" — and this is just the tip of the iceberg of Qatar's controversial policies.
